• A method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body.

Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement.

Joseph Pilates developed his own programme of exercise and bodybuilding, which he initially used to train self-defense athlets. Later on, he refined his ideas and used rigged strings to hospital beds to enable bedridden patients to exercise against resistance. Pilates’ method allowed and encouraged movement early in the rehabilitation process, by providing needed assistance. It was found that reintroducing movement with nondestructive forces early in the rehabilitation process hastened the healing process. As a result, it was not long before the method gained favor in the dance community in Europe and in New York.

Today's practitioners have now been influenced by other diverse fields and modern research. Within the rehabilitation setting, practitioners are using the method in multiple fields of rehabilitation, including general orthopaedic, and chronic pain. Through the use of several types of apparatus, which is adjustable so that the challenge of gravity is altered accordingly, an individual may be progressed toward achieving functional movement.

I was initially trained by Cherry Baker and Modern Pilates that combines original Pilates principles with the most recent research and knowledge about exercise, fitness and core stability to provide a sound programme that can be adjusted to anyone with specific back issues. I am also a Polestar Certified Pilates Equipment Teacher for Rehabilitation. I have a strong interest in working with people with back pain, scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis, or other back syndromes.
